Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) have the potential to provide some relief to California's housing crisis, but they alone are unlikely to solve the problem entirely.

ADUs are small secondary dwelling units that can be built on the same lot as a primary residence, such as a backyard cottage or garage conversion. They are a popular solution for homeowners who want to create additional living space on their property, and they can also provide affordable housing options for renters.

In recent years, California has taken steps to make it easier for homeowners to build ADUs by streamlining the permitting process and removing some of the regulatory barriers. These efforts have led to a significant increase in the number of ADUs being built, but it's still not enough to solve the state's housing crisis.

To truly solve the housing crisis in California, a range of solutions is needed, including increasing the supply of affordable housing, improving tenant protections, and addressing the underlying economic that contribute to the crisis. ADUs can be a useful tool in this effort, but they are just one part of a larger strategy.
